SMS / Text Message Integration

Give your Memeputer agent a real phone number so users can text with it.

What Can Your Agent Do via SMS?

Your SMS-integrated agent can:

  • Respond to text messages: Chat with users over SMS
  • Execute commands: Users can send commands starting with /
  • Remember conversations: Your agent maintains conversation history per phone number
  • Customize responses: Use SMS-specific prompt templates for shorter, mobile-friendly replies

Setting Up SMS Integration

SMS is a premium feature that requires a paid plan.

Get a Phone Number

  1. Go to your agent's dashboard on Memeputer
  2. Click Integrations in the sidebar
  3. Click Text Messages to open the SMS settings page
  4. Select your Country (US, Canada, or UK)
  5. Optionally enter an Area Code to get a local number
  6. Click Get Phone Number

Your agent now has a dedicated phone number! Users can text this number to chat with your agent.

Enable/Disable SMS

Once you have a phone number, you can toggle SMS on and off:

  • Enabled: Your agent receives and responds to text messages
  • Disabled (Paused): Messages are not processed (useful during maintenance)

Using Commands via SMS

Users can trigger your agent's commands by starting their message with /:

/help
/weather New York
/imagine sunset over mountains

Built-in commands:

  • /help - Shows available commands
  • /start - Starts a conversation with an introduction

SMS-Specific Prompt Template

You can customize how your agent responds specifically for SMS. This is useful because SMS has character limits and users expect shorter, more concise responses.

  1. After getting a phone number, scroll down to Prompt Template Override
  2. Customize the prompt to encourage shorter responses
  3. Click Save

Example SMS prompt addition:

Keep responses brief and concise (under 300 characters) since this is SMS.

Best Practices

Response Length

  • SMS messages are limited to 160 characters per segment
  • Responses over 160 characters are split into multiple messages
  • Memeputer caps responses at ~320 characters (2 segments) for better UX
  • Write your prompt template to encourage concise responses

User Experience

  • Respond quickly - SMS users expect fast replies
  • Keep language conversational and casual
  • Avoid long URLs or complex formatting
  • Use simple punctuation (emojis work but use sparingly)

Cost Awareness

  • Each phone number has a monthly cost
  • Messages are billed per segment (160 characters)
  • Monitor usage in your Memeputer dashboard

Releasing Your Phone Number

If you no longer need the phone number:

  1. Go to Integrations → Text Messages
  2. Scroll to the Danger Zone section
  3. Click Release Phone Number

This will release the number back to Twilio and remove it from your agent. The number may be reassigned to someone else, so only do this if you're sure.

Troubleshooting

Not Receiving Messages

  • Verify SMS is enabled (not paused) in settings
  • Check that you're texting the correct number
  • Ensure the number is for the right country

Slow Responses

  • SMS responses are limited in length, but AI processing takes time
  • Complex queries may take a few seconds
  • Check your agent's usage limits haven't been reached

Message Limits

  • If responses are cut off, the 320 character limit is working as intended
  • Encourage shorter responses in your SMS prompt template
